- Delta Dental puts a permanent crown at $1,100 to $2,000 out of network (2023 data).
- Coast Dental, a chain with Texas offices, titles its schedule 2025 but footnotes “Fees effective 01/01/19”.
- VA figures are what VA bills insurers before a ZIP-code adjustment, not patient prices.
- Implant crowns: MetLife $800 to $3,000 (2025), Guardian $1,000 to $2,000 or more (2026), VA $2,345 to $2,438. The whole implant is on dental implant cost in Texas.
For bridges, Delta Dental puts a three-unit bridge, “two crowns and a pontic”, at $3,600 out of network (July 2026). CareCredit’s traditional bridge averages $5,197 with no unit count, and its Maryland bridge $1,569. Guardian, restating Healthline (2024), gives $5,000 to $15,000 for an implant bridge on two implants. Aspen Dental averages $7,663 per implant bridge with its savings plan and ClearChoice quotes $10,500 to $13,500; CareCredit’s $5,195 implant-bridge average sits below every Texas office fee.
What dental insurance pays
- Major care at 50%. Delta Dental describes the common 100-80-50 plan as paying “50% of major procedures such as crowns, bridges and implants.” Humana Extend 2500 pays major care “including crowns and dentures” at 50% after the deductible, after a 12-month wait.
- Waiting periods. Cigna says a wait of up to six months is possible for care beyond preventive exams. Aetna waives basic and major waits with continuous coverage within 90 days of enrolling.
- Annual maximum. Delta Dental’s example is $1,500 a year. The plan’s half of a $3,600 bridge is $1,800, more than that maximum.
- Exclusions. Golden Rule’s DentalWise Max excludes a first bridge for a tooth lost before coverage began; Ameritas says such teeth are generally not eligible. Guardian says some plans treat certain crowns as cosmetic.
As arithmetic only, a $1,250 crown on a 50% plan leaves $625 to pay. Plan caps are on dental insurance and implants in Texas. Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care, and Texas Medicaid has no crown or bridge benefit for adults; see Texas Medicaid and implants.
Dental schools and paying over time
- UT Health San Antonio. The student clinic does crowns and bridges for “about 60 percent less than private practice care” after a $50 screening, without billing insurance. Residents are about 33 percent lower.
- UTHealth Houston. Most student-clinic fees are under $200, paid upfront; resident fees average about two-thirds of private fees.
- Texas A&M, Dallas. A $120 adult screening fee, waived if you are not accepted; adult clinics take no insurance.
- Texas Tech, El Paso. Student fees “as much as 50% lower”; Texas Medicaid and Delta Dental accepted.
Intake details are on Texas dental schools. Discount programs “are not insurance” (Texas Department of Insurance); DentalPlans.com lists a PFM crown at $1,500 without the Aetna Dental Access card and $949 with it. CareCredit charges no interest on $200 or more paid off within 6 to 24 months; otherwise accrued interest is added.
